America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ+ 2024

Amid a growing national emphasis on inclusivity, U.S. workplaces have made moves in recent years to ensure that all employees feel valued and respected. Companies are creating employee resource groups that represent minority population segments and crafting policies that set goals for diversity in leadership roles.

But despite progress regarding LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, many members of the community report that their workplace remains a challenging setting. A 2023 report from employment-focused website Glassdoor found that 45 percent of employed LGBTQ+ Americans believe that being "out" at work could hurt their careers via losing a job, being passed over for a promotion or excluded from a project.

To spotlight the companies that are taking meaningful steps toward providing a culture of inclusivity for employees of all sexual orientations and gender identities, Newsweek has partnered with data analytics firm Plant-A for the second annual ranking of America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ+. The list recognizes the top 400 companies across 78 industries.

To compile the data used in the ranking, Plant-A interviewed more than 29,000 LGBTQ+ employees, who gave more than 205,000 company reviews. These interviews were followed by a desk research phase that weighed key performance indicators such as a company's commitment to the LGBTQ+ community and information gathered from social media.

The ranked companies have been divided into two tiers: those with 5,000 or more employees, and those with 1,000 to 4,999 employees. However they approach creating a more inclusive environment, they have all sent a powerful message to clients and customers that a more supportive workplace benefits everyone.

However, LGBTQ+ employees still can face challenges such as discrimination and lack of support in the workplace. Companies should prioritize implementing inclusive and supportive policies and practices that foster a safe and supportive environment for all employees. By actively supporting LGBTQ+ employees, companies not only create a more equitable workplace but also reap the rewards of a diverse and thriving workforce.

The methodology for America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ+ 2024 is based on a five-part evaluation.

The first was a pre-study survey that interviewed HR professionals to identify current and future employee satisfaction drivers.

The second phase was the main employee survey among LGBTQ+ employees who reviewed employers they were familiar with. The independent study is based on more than 29,000 LGBTQ+ employees who provided more than 205,000 company reviews collected in 2022 and 2023.

The third phase was an elaborate desk research project in which we collected overall 8KPIs relevant for LGBTQ+ employees in the workplace (e.g. official commitments to the LGBTQ+ community, reviews and information from social media platforms).

In the fourth phase, we applied a media monitoring project, reviewing all published press of the past 24 months (12/9/2021 – 12/10/2023) of all recognized companies to identify potential legal disputes around the workplace.

The fifth step was the validation step. We calculated an individual company score based on our scoring model. The best companies in the tiers of 5,000+ employees and 1,000 to 4,999 employees have been recognized as "America's Greatest Workplaces for LGBTQ+ 2024."
