Asia's Top Private Hospitals 2025

Asia's Top Private Hospitals 2025

Asia has established itself as a global leader in private health care, offering state-of-the-art surgeries. The region is also a growing destination for medical tourism, attracting patients seeking treatments at competitive costs. Demand is poised to surge at a compound annual growth rate of 22.4 percent from 2024 to 2029 as patients seek high-quality care and innovative procedures.

Private hospitals in India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand draw patients worldwide for their expertise in orthopedics and ophthalmology in particular. While there is no shortage of options, reliable information about the comparative quality of care remains limited.

To provide much-needed insight into the hospitals providing excellent care in these disciplines, Newsweek and Statista are proud to present Asia's Top Private Hospitals 2025 for the first time. This list identifies hospitals providing outstanding care in the following procedures: knee surgeries and knee replacements, hip surgeries and hip replacements, shoulder surgeries, refractive eye surgeries and cataract surgeries.

The selection process involved stringent criteria, incorporating recommendations from health care professionals, accreditations and certifications and patient-reported outcome data.

This inaugural list spotlights institutions such as Samsung Medical Center in South Korea, which is recognized for its eye surgeries; Subang Jaya Medical Centre in Malaysia, which is celebrated for hip surgeries; and Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand, a leader in knee and shoulder surgeries.

We hope this ranking serves as a valuable guide for individuals seeking the best private health care options in Asia.

METHODOLOGY

Asia is home to tens of thousands of hospitals, many privately run and offering a wide range of healthcare services across specialties. With a multitude of available options and limited insight into the comparative quality of care, especially at the treatment level, a means of highlighting the top providers is essential.

For the first time, Statista and Newsweek have partnered to award Asia's Top Private Hospitals 2025 as a means of highlighting institutions that have demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality care. The leading private hospitals across Asia are recognized for excellence in select procedures within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology.

The ranking features a focused list for each of five select procedures: knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, shoulder surgery, refractive eye surgery, and cataract surgery. The top 35 hospitals for orthopedic procedures and the top 30 hospitals for ophthalmology procedures are ranked in order, with the remainder listed alphabetically.

The lists are based on three data sources:

1. International online survey – peer recommendations:
During the survey period from September to October 2024, medical professionals across Asia were invited to an online survey in cooperation with Newsweek. Participants were asked to recommend leading hospitals for several elective surgeries based on their expertise in the specialties of orthopedics (including knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, and shoulder surgery) and ophthalmology (including refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery).
2. Accreditation data:
Several accreditations/certifications were analyzed where available. Accreditations reflect a range of structural and/or quality requirements relevant for the rankings.
3. Statista PROMS Implementation Survey:
Newsweek and Statista conduct an annual PROMs Implementation Survey to account for the increasing importance of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The survey cycle for this ranking was conducted during the fall of 2023. Hospitals that participated in the survey received a PROMs Implementation score, which was included in the scoring model for orthopedic procedures only.

Scoring model

• Hospital recommendations from peers (90% for orthopedics; 92.5% for ophthalmology)
• Accreditations/certifications (6.5% for orthopedics; 7.5% for ophthalmology)
• PROMs Implementation Survey (3.5%, for orthopedics only)

International online survey – peer recommendations

From September to October 2024, Statista invited medical professionals across Asia with expertise in orthopedics and/or ophthalmology to participate in an online survey that allowed them to recommend and assess various hospitals. Participants were invited to the survey via e-mail.

Participants were asked to recommend and assess hospitals, in their own country as well as in other Asian countries, that provide top-quality care for select surgeries within the specialties of orthopedics (including knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, and shoulder surgery) and ophthalmology (including refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery). Recommendations for their own employer/hospital were not allowed.

The national and international recommendations and assessments were analyzed for each procedure examined. A reputation score was assigned to each hospital based on the number of weighted recommendations. Additionally, the professional experience of the participant was considered.

The reputation score constituted 90% of the overall hospital score for orthopedic procedures and 92.5% of the score for ophthalmological procedures.

Accreditations/certifications

A wide range of accreditations and certifications were incorporated into the scoring model (where available). The following accreditations/certifications reflect a range of structural and/or quality requirements relevant for the rankings:

• JCI (Joint Commission International)
• JCT (Joint Commission of Taiwan)
• NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers)
• KOIHA (Korea Institute for Healthcare Accreditation)
• MHLW (Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare)
• MSQH (Malaysian Society for Quality in Health)

In addition to general hospital accreditations/certifications, available accreditations/certifications relevant to the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology (e.g., Hip Replacement / Knee Replacement (JCI) or Eye Care Organisations (NABH)) were used.

The accreditation/certification score constituted 6.5% of the overall score for orthopedic procedures and 7.5% of the score for ophthalmological procedures.

PROMs Implementation Survey
Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.

Since 2023, a PROMs Implementation score has been included in Statista hospital rankings. In the fall of each year, Newsweek and Statista conduct a PROMs Implementation Survey cycle to determine the status quo of PROMs implementation, auditing and reporting of the data, and whether the PROMs data is used to optimize the care process and support therapeutic decisions in real-time.

In cooperation with a panel of experts, A grading system for the different questions was built to determine a PROMs Implementation score for each participating hospital. Only hospitals that achieved a minimum of 50% (of the maximum 100% score) were eligible to be graded and received a maximum of up to 3.5% towards the total score (relevant for orthopedic rankings only).

Hospitals that submitted a validated survey received a checkmark in the result presentation. Hospitals that exceeded the threshold received one ribbon, and hospitals with a high degree of PROMs Implementation received two ribbons in the result presentation.

Pre-registration for future survey cycles is available here.

Disclaimer

The rankings are comprised exclusively of hospitals that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last 12 months.

Furthermore, events preceding or following the period November 15th, 2023 – November 14th, 2024, and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about hospitals or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility. The quality of hospitals that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
