Forgotten Red Sox Trade-Deadline Acquisition Reportedly Joins AL West Club

Another Major League Baseball team is taking a chance on Luis Urias.

On Monday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reported that Urias had a locker at Athletics spring training. As of this writing, the details of Urias' deal with the Athletics weren't immediately clear.

Some Red Sox fans will remember Urias, whom Boston acquired in 2023 in a pre-deadline trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Red Sox traded pitching prospect Bradley Blalock, who split time with the Brewers and Colorado Rockies last season while posting a 5.87 ERA in seven appearances.

The Red Sox acquired Urias hoping he'd emerge as a depth infielder worth rostering in 2024. But Urias struggled in Boston, registering a .225 average with two homers and a .698 OPS in 32 games.

The Athletics will hope that Urias, 27, somehow can turn back into the player we saw in 2021 and 2022. During those two seasons with the Brewers, Urias hit .244 with 20 homers and a respectable .766 OPS in 269 games.

Urias spent all of 2024 with the Seattle Mariners, hitting .191 with four homers and a .696 OPS in 41 games.
