Latin America's Top Private Hospitals 2025

Latin America's Top Private Hospitals 2025

Latin America has earned a reputation for exceptional private health care, offering world-class services across a range of specialties. The region has become a hub for medical tourism and demand is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 18.9 percent from 2024 to 2029 as patients seek out cost-effective knee, shoulder, hip and eye surgeries.

Private hospitals in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama and Peru attract patients from across the globe seeking the highest standards of care, particularly within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology. There's no shortage of options, but information about the comparative quality of care isn't widely available.

In order to provide much-needed insight and illuminate the hospitals excelling in these disciplines, Newsweek and Statista are proud to present Latin America's Top Private Hospitals 2025 for the first time. This list identifies hospitals providing outstanding care in the following procedures: knee surgeries and knee replacements, hip surgeries and hip replacements, shoulder surgeries, refractive eye surgeries and cataract surgeries.

The selection process for this ranking involved rigorous criteria including hospital recommendations from medical professionals with expertise in orthopedics and/or ophthalmology. A wide range of accreditations and certifications were also incorporated into the scoring model.

The inaugural list features Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, which is recognized for hip surgeries and replacements; Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, which specializes in cataract surgeries; and Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, which offers first-class knee surgeries.

We hope this ranking is a valuable resource for those seeking the best private health care options in Latin America.

METHODOLOGY

Latin America's vast healthcare network is home to thousands of hospitals, the majority of which are privately run and offer a wide range of medical services across various specialties. With a multitude of available options and limited insight into the comparative quality of care, especially at the treatment level, a means of highlighting the top providers is essential.

For the first time, Statista and Newsweek have partnered to award Latin America's Top Private Hospitals 2025 as a means of highlighting institutions that have demonstrated commitment to delivering high-quality care. The leading private hospitals across Latin America are recognized for excellence in select procedures within the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology.

The ranking features a focused list for each of five select procedures: knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, shoulder surgery, refractive eye surgery, and cataract surgery. The top 35 hospitals for orthopedic procedures and the top 30 hospitals for ophthalmology procedures are ranked in order, with the remainder listed alphabetically.

The lists are based on three data sources:

1. International online survey – peer recommendations:
During the survey period from September to October 2024, medical professionals across Latin America were invited to an online survey in cooperation with Newsweek. Participants were asked to recommend leading hospitals for several elective surgeries based on their expertise in the specialties of orthopedics (including knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, and shoulder surgery) and ophthalmology (including refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery).

2. Accreditation data:
Several accreditations/certifications were analyzed where available. Accreditations reflect a range of structural and/or quality requirements relevant for the rankings.

3. Statista PROMS Implementation Survey:
Newsweek and Statista conduct an annual PROMs Implementation Survey to account for the increasing importance of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). The survey cycle for this ranking was conducted during the fall of 2023. Hospitals that participated in the survey received a PROMs Implementation score, which was included in the scoring model for orthopedic procedures only.

Scoring model

Hospital recommendations from peers (90% for orthopedics; 92.5% for ophthalmology)
• Accreditations/certifications (6.5% for orthopedics; 7.5% for ophthalmology)
• PROMs Implementation Survey (3.5%, for orthopedics only)

International online survey – peer recommendations

From September to October 2024, Statista invited medical professionals across Latin America with expertise in orthopedics and/or ophthalmology to participate in an online survey that allowed them to recommend and assess various hospitals. Participants were invited to the survey via e-mail.

Participants were asked to recommend and assess hospitals, in their own country as well as in other Latin American countries, that provide top-quality care for select surgeries within the specialties of orthopedics (including knee surgery & knee replacement, hip surgery & hip replacement, and shoulder surgery) and ophthalmology (including refractive eye surgery and cataract surgery). Recommendations for their own employer/hospital were not allowed.

The national and international recommendations and assessments were analyzed for each procedure examined. A reputation score was assigned to each hospital based on the number of weighted recommendations. Additionally, the professional experience of the participant was considered.

The reputation score constituted 90% of the overall hospital score for orthopedic procedures and 92.5% of the score for ophthalmological procedures.

Accreditations/certifications
A wide range of accreditations and certifications were incorporated into the scoring model (where available). The following accreditations/certifications reflect a range of structural and/or quality requirements relevant for the rankings:

• AACI (American Accreditation Commission International)
• AAOT (Asociación Argentina de Ortopedia y Traumatología)
• AATO (Asociación Argentina del Trauma Ortopédico)
• ACHC (Accreditation Commission for Health Care)
• Accreditation Canada
• Consejo de Salubridad General
• IAHCS (Instituto de Administração Hospitalar e Ciências da Saúde) Acreditação
• Icontec Acreditación en Salud
• ISOC (International Society of Orthopaedic Centers, Ltd.)
• ITAES (Instituto Técnico para la Acreditación de Establecimientos de Salud)
• JCI (Joint Commission International)
• OES (Organización para la Excelencia de la Salud)
• ONA (Organização Nacional de Acreditação)
• PADI (Programa de Acreditação em Diagnóstico por Imagem)
• Planetree
• Qmentum Global
• WAEH (World Association of Eye Hospitals)

In addition to general hospital accreditations/certifications, available accreditations/certifications relevant to the specialties of orthopedics and ophthalmology (e.g., WAEH (World Association of Eye Hospitals) accreditation) were used.

The accreditation/certification score constituted 6.5% of the overall score for orthopedic procedures and 7.5% of the score for ophthalmological procedures.

PROMs Implementation Survey
Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are defined as standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life.

Since 2023, a PROMs Implementation score has been included in Statista hospital rankings. In the fall of each year, Newsweek and Statista conduct a PROMs Implementation Survey cycle to determine the status quo of PROMs implementation, auditing and reporting of the data, and whether the PROMs data is used to optimize the care process and support therapeutic decisions in real-time.

In cooperation with a panel of experts, A grading system for the different questions was built to determine a PROMs Implementation score for each participating hospital. Only hospitals that achieved a minimum of 50% (of the maximum 100% score) were eligible to be graded and received a maximum of up to 3.5% towards the total score (relevant for orthopedic rankings only).

Hospitals that submitted a validated survey received a checkmark in the result presentation. Hospitals that exceeded the threshold received one ribbon, and hospitals with a high degree of PROMs Implementation received two ribbons in the result presentation.

Pre-registration for future survey cycles is available here.

Disclaimer

The rankings are comprised exclusively of hospitals that are eligible regarding the scope described in this document. The ranking is the result of an elaborate process which, due to the interval of data collection and analysis, is a reflection of the last 12 months.

Furthermore, events preceding or following the period November 14th, 2023 – November 13th, 2024, and/or pertaining to individual persons affiliated/associated to the facilities were not included in the metrics. As such, the results of this ranking should not be used as the sole source of information for future deliberations. The information provided in this ranking should be considered in conjunction with other available information about hospitals or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility. The quality of hospitals that are not included in the rankings is not disputed.
