Long-Distance Boyfriend Tries To Plan Surprise—Goes Hilariously Wrong

A TikTok video has gone viral after showing a long-distance relationship surprise that, while well-intended, took a turn for the unexpected.

Lena Huynh, 21, posted a clip of her terrified reaction to seeing her long-distance boyfriend standing in her room a day before he was meant to arrive. Since the video was posted, it has received more than 3.6 million likes and over 6,300 comments. Huynh told Newsweek about the hilarious encounter, and why seeing her boyfriend was the last thing she expected.

"When your long-distance boyfriend tries to surprise you, but you thought there was a random man standing in your room," Huynh captioned the video. It shows her walking into her bedroom, letting out a terrified scream and then falling to the floor.

Hyunh said she had spent the day proctoring an organic chemistry exam and was expecting a quiet evening before reuniting with her boyfriend the next day. What she didn't anticipate was her boyfriend, who had secretly driven several hours to surprise her, waiting for her in her room holding a bouquet of flowers.

"I initially screamed, and my brain realized it was my boyfriend, so I was relieved and dropped down to the floor," Hyunh said. "In my brain, I was differentiating between my boyfriend, a random man, my roommates or some random ghost."

Hyunh shared more about the surprise, revealing that her boyfriend had been texting her and pretending he was going to bed early to make the drive to visit her the next morning. The couple hadn't seen each other for one month.

"My boyfriend hung up the call out of nowhere and said he had to go. I assumed it was a work call," Huynh said. "No one is ever in my room, so I would never expect to see a humanly figure in my room!"

But the surprise wasn't just about the early visit. Hyunh's boyfriend had also coordinated with her roommates to ensure the surprise went off without a hitch.

"He pulled off the surprise by texting my roommates on Instagram to open the door for him the day before," she said.

Despite the initial shock, the surprise turned out to be a heartwarming moment. Hyunh's boyfriend not only showed up early but also asked her to be his Valentine and gave her an early birthday present.

While their time together was short, Hyunh said she and her boyfriend loved it, playing pickleball, studying together and enjoying sushi in town. "We always make the best of it," she added.

In the end, despite the panic-induced scream, Hyunh agreed that the surprise was worth it—proof that sometimes, the best surprises are the ones that catch you completely off guard.
