"Nobody wants to see cross-Strait issues come to blows—certainly not President Biden, and there's no reason that it should," Austin said.

Taiwan's ruling party has "thrown itself into a political gamble that has only short-term benefits and no chance of winning in the long run," said the Global Times.

China's state-owned Global Times has continued its campaign against Lithuania following a decision to allow a de facto Taiwan embassy in Vilnius.

Hu Xijin of the Global Times criticized Lithuania on social media before penning an editorial about the Baltic state's refusal to acquiesce to China's demands.

Representatives Tom Tiffany and Scott Perry have called for a scrapping of the United States' long-standing one-China policy and the resumption of formal ties with Taipei.
